CoCA's 1999 Northwest Annual

juried by Kerry James Marshall
January 16 - March 13, 1999

From January 16-March 13, CoCA will present the 1999 Northwest Annual, an exhibition juried by the acclaimed painter Kerry James Marshall. The Annual will open on January 16, from 7-11 p.m., at CoCA. The opening reception will feature the announcemennt of prizewinners at 7:30 p.m., and music by Wayne Horvitz and Zony Mash from 8-9 p.m. Admission to the opening is free to CoCA members; and $5 for all others. Regular admission to the exhibition throughout its run (Tuesday-Saturday, 11-6 p.m.) is free to CoCA members, and by donation for the general public.

The Northwest Annual - now in its tenth year as presented by CoCA - provides much-needed exposure for artists from the region, and also provides the public with a unique chance to view new and experimental artwork firsthand. Media to be shown in the 1999 Annual include painting, sculpture, mixed media and works on paper.

The exhibition was juried by Kerry James Marshall, a Chicago-based painter who has received international acclaim. His current traveling exhibition, "Momentos," is the subject of an article in the November 1998 issue of Art in America. This is the most recent of numerous solo shows throughout the US, including a 1995 exhibition at the Greg Kucera Gallery in Seattle. His work was seen in 1997 at "Documenta X" in Kassel, Germany, and the 69th Biennial Exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art (NYC). He has received many important grants and awards, most notably, a 1997 MacArthur Foundation Fellowship. His work is in the collections of major museums including The Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Walker Art Center, and The Studio Museum In Harlem, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Corcoran Gallery of Art (Washington DC), Denver Art Museum, and the St. Louis Art Museum.

Marshall, who came to Seattle in December to jury the show, selected 33 works by 24 artists (10 women and 14 men), from a field of approximately 1200 slides submitted by 321 artists. Marshall selected two prizewinners, both of which will receive $1000 prizes. Marshall selected the exhibition and prizewinners using a traditional blind jurying process.

The 1999 Northwest Annual has received support from the Allen Foundation for the Arts, Allied Arts Foundation, and the King County Arts Commission. Additional major funding to CoCA has come from Corporate Council for the Arts, PONCHO, Cathy Sarkowsky Foundation, Sarkowsky Family Foundation, Japan Foundation, Washington State Arts Commission, Washington Women's Foundation, Rebecca and Zandy Stewart, Mia McEldowney, Pierre de Vries, Helen Gurvich, Peggy Hughes, Richard Hedreen, Terry Stephens, Vicki Stolsen and Richard Kellum, Todd Kluger, David Skinner and Catherine Eaton Skinner, Debbi Lester, Alan Pruzan, Pruzan Foundation, George and Carlyn Steiner, and Vine Street Association/Koryn Rolstad and Kieth Kegley. cqueline Barnett, Seattle, WA
