Creativity Persists

Creativity Persists

Join Center on Contemporary Art (CoCA) as they share their members’ creativity in the 2018 CoCA Members’ Show, Creativity Persists. Juried by Jody Bento, Director of SAM Gallery, artists of all ages and media including 2D, 3D, multi-media, installation, literary, sound, and performance are invited to join CoCA for this annual show that celebrates the true depths of creativity and highlights top artists in the Pacific NW and across the globe.

With Seattle’s rapid growth and radical changes, alongside the current backdrop of our country, the creative artist is essential to the health of society. For 36 years, CoCA has amplified contemporary artists’ voices through hundreds of exhibitions. Their annual members’ show welcomes creativity in all its forms and in multiple events as they gather together to celebrate the hard work of artists and creatives of all types.

This year as a special opportunity to CoCA artist members, SAM Gallery will show at least one member’s submitted artwork in their upcoming 45th-anniversary show, scheduled for November 2018! Also this year we will have two People’s Choice Award winners that will each receive a $100 gift card to Good Bar in Pioneer Square. All current member artists that apply will be included in the printed exhibition catalog and considered for CoCA’s Pioneer Square gallery exhibition by Jody Bento and for the incredible opportunity to show at SAM Gallery in November.  Deadline to apply is Sunday, March 18, 2018, at 11:59 PM Pacific Standard Time.

Members’ art in Creativity Persists will be on display in CoCA’s Pioneer Square Gallery from April 26-May 26, 2018. The exhibition will open to a celebration during the Pioneer Square Art Walk on May 3 from 6-9pm. This year’s private members-only party will be held on Tuesday, May 1, 2018, from 6-8pm where special guest, Jody Bento, will discuss the art on display and announce this year’s winner of the SAM Gallery exhibition.  People’s Choice Award winners will be announced at the end of the exhibition.

Jody Bento was made in the Northwest -- her grandfather homesteaded in North Bend WA, her father retired from the Boeing Co. and her mother from the Edmonds School District.  After growing up in Edmonds, she attended Western Washington University where she met her mother-in-law— who just happened to be her Fall quarter freshman advisor-- prior to meeting her husband. After college, she spent 15 years in what we now call the Tech industry working primarily for Nintendo of America in Redmond.  Looking for a change at mid-career she went back to school to the University of Washington where she completed their program in Museum Studies. Over 17 years ago the Seattle Art Museum hired her and the rest is, as they say, “her story.”  SAM Gallery at the Seattle Art Museum operates under her leadership supporting thousands of Northwest artists, in hundreds of shows, raising millions of dollars in 45 years of exhibitions.
