Center on Contemporary Art (CoCA) presents Old is Not a Dirty Word, a group show of queer women artists and performers over the age of 50 that take on the stereotype that women beyond this age are not as valuable in the arts community and beyond. This is the fourth show in CoCA’s 2019 exhibition season, which is dedicated to amplifying female-identified voices and themes throughout the year. #fightsilence
There is a widespread belief that older women, especially lesbians, have had their day and are now up on the shelf to be consulted as “elders” instead of vital participants in the current creative workforce. CoCA, in our disruption of that belief, present an extravaganza of art and performances created by dykes over the age of 50.
Old is Not a Dirty Word includes artwork by Lamar Van Dyke, Zoe Harris, Kathy Ross, Ingrid Berkhout, Bear Dyson, Ann Coppel, Tamara the Trapeze Lady, and Strawhat.
We’ll also be hosting a burlesque fashion show and performance. Tamara the Trapeze Lady will present her hand-stitched burlesque costumes in a fashion show and performance , in and around the gallery during the monthly Pioneer Square art walk on July 11. Note that in July, the art walk is on Second Thursday, not First Thursday, due to the Independence Day holiday.
