CoCA Lab: Wyly Astley

CoCA Lab: Artist in Residence Program

Featuring Wyly Astley. Feronia Fox Gets a Room of Her Own

During her residency, Wyly is adopting the persona of Feronia Fox, a fox who has sufficiently honored [succumbed to] instinctual obligation as a progenitor and provider but now senses that there is something else for her. She finds that this blossoming self-awareness has a loud insistence of its own – but it is decidedly different than the Call of the Wild.

I am using this residency to create a living allegory of a self who is wrestling with new-found freedom and also creativity, personal relationships and the responsibilities of her choices. Feronia will begin by creating a space for herself where she can close the door and, on March 12, she will swing open the door and share what she has done.

Since 2008, Wyly has created temporary outdoor installations for a wide variety of entities including the Nature Consortium's Art's in Nature Festival, Georgetown Carnival Arts Festival, Daniel Bagley Elementary School, Smoke Farm's LoFi Festival, and as part of residencies with Little Eorthe Farm in Orting, WA, Smoke Farm in Arlington, WA and on the Vaanta River as part of a residency in Helsinki, Finland.

In addition to her installation work, Wyly creates soft sculpture, art jewelry and costuming and props for local theater. Wyly graduated from the University of Texas in English Literature, received a certificate from the University of Washington's Fiber Arts Certification Program and was selected to participate in the Artist Trust EDGE Program for Professional Artists.
