Michelle de la Vega

CoCA UN[contained]: Michelle de la Vega

Featuring the kinetic sculpture FROM ONE TO ANOTHER

CoCA is pleased to present Michelle de la Vega's kinetic sculpture, FROM ONE TO ANOTHER. Inspired by Patricia Ledesma who, when diagnosed with ovarian cancer, uprooted her garden of plants to give to the Tashiro Kaplan artist housing rooftop garden. When touched the sculpture reverberates with shimmering sound. From SUCCESSION: The Exchange Project installation.

Artist Statement:

Michelle de la Vega is a multidisciplinary social engagement installation artist and community activist. Her visual art practice spans 24 years and a 19-year career as a dance and performance artist. Working in diverse media, including collage, metal, video, assemblage, sculptural forms and choreography, Michelle's projects delve into atypical materials evoked and shaped through her conceptual practice.

Michelle approaches art as relational endeavor, exploring methods in her creative process and exhibitions that go beyond commentary into the realm of direct transformational experience. Interested in creating immersive environments that connect individuals and communities, illuminate unheard voices and explore concepts that are personally and collectively relevant, Michelle's projects engage a dialogue between subjective emotions and objective cultural conditions.

Currently working through a model she developed for partnering with communities, Michelle holistically integrates specific demographics into the creative processes and exhibitions of her installation projects. She places a high value on the mutually reciprocal partnerships between the artist and the public that are created though this process.

Michelle's work is conceptually driven, and has strong design perspective regarding minimalist form, textural patterning, image, story and thoughtful response to site. She is compelled by the role design plays in opening up mental, emotional and physical accessibility when communicating ideas, endeavoring to create work that demonstrates specificity and scale, yet is deeply infused with a personal, authentically human sensibility.
