Dawn/Dusk
Artist’s Statement:
My Dawn/Dusk series celebrates the magical, transitional moments at the beginning and end of the day—starting with the first glow of early morning until the sun's rays break over the horizon, and ending with the peach-orange hues of day's reset. This magic magnifies when reflected across the water, spreading toward the viewer, making the experience even more mesmerizing. These times of day are filled with promise—for today, tomorrow, and the future. They represent hopeful moments, echoing human rituals shared worldwide: rising, awakening, gathering, and contemplating. Each piece is loosely inspired by a local sunrise or sunset, ranging from vibrant bursts of color against clear skies to softer glows filtered through marine layers and fog. Using a mix of luxurious, pigment-rich walnut oil paint and oil paint sticks with beeswax, the textured surfaces capture the water, the wind, and the energy of these fleeting moments..

Artist’s Bio:
Teresa Stern’s expressive paintings pull inspiration from Pacific Northwest landscapes. Stern is inspired by the abstractions of Impressionists and Fauvists. Stern plays on the movement of shifted color and light relationships. Stern’s sustainability background drives her to use art as a connector between humans and nature, and create in oil paints using plant-based solvents and sealers.
Stern currently lives and works in Seattle. She holds a Masters of Sustainable Architecture from the University of Arizona, and has studied art at Gage and Pratt in Seattle, and the University of Illinois.
She has exhibited her work locally and nationally. She has received two City of Seattle smArt Grants, and was an Artist in Residence at Centrum at Fort Worden Washington State Park and Hypatia-in-the-Woods in Shelton, Washington.
